A rustic interior has an earthy, comforting look with near universal appeal. But when you're living in a modern home or high-rise apartment, it can seem a bit silly trying to recreate the kind of rustic interior you normally see in a magazine. After all, many rustic interiors belong to huge old country homes in Europe or far-flung Mediterranean locales. The truth is that most of us don't really want to live in a full-on rustic home complete with an ancient bathroom or kitchen. We just want to give our small home a rustic touch. So how can this be done? Well, keep reading for a few ideas… complete with beautiful photos of course!

1. Add wooden cupboard doors

This gorgeous Scandinavian-style kitchen has some definite rustic flair going on. Our eye keeps getting drawn to the wooden kitchen cupboards. There are just two of them, but they pack a powerful punch. You don't even need to do a full-scale renovation to recreate this look. Just change the cupboard doors. If you want to do more, of course, the wooden paneling on the walls is a nice touch.

2. Separate the living spaces with a wooden dividing wall

Small homes often have open-plan living spaces with some kind of partition. This is a real chance to infuse your home with a touch of nature. A wooden dividing wall like this is a great idea.

3. Use wicker lampshades

In a small home it often pays to work upwards and use your ceiling space for decoration. The light fittings are a good opportunity to add some rustic flair. Perhaps you could indulge in some big wicker light shades like this.

4. Employ an earthy colour scheme

An earthy colour scheme is a simple, but important choice. It doesn't always have to be brown. Even a warm rustic gold like this works.

5. Add warm golden lights

If you don't want to change the wall colour, it's easy to simply warm up the lighting scheme. Bulbs on the warm end of the colour spectrum are available in cheap and environmentally sustainable LED lighting now too.

6. Create a mini indoor garden

There's nothing like a tiny indoor garden to infuse some natural rustic life into the home. In a small home you might even create a little mini garden like this.

7. Or just play up the wall garden

If you don't have the floor space for a mini garden, you definitely have some wall space for a vertical garden! Don't just hang plants; build it up into an extravagent display with a rich wooden wall mount like this.

8. Add a faux brick wall

Rustic homes have a rich variety of natural textures. When you don't have much floor space to work with, it really helps to put the walls to work. Perhaps you could add an exposed brick wall. This look could be created with some brick tiles or even a brick-themed wallpaper.

9. And finish with chunky wooden furniture

No matter how small or modern your home, it's easy enough to create an earthy look with chunky wooden furniture against an earthy brown wall. The proof is in this lovely modern rustic interior!

So let's get back to some big time inspiration with The timber home you don't forget.
