This stylish apartment was designed by the team at Vanessa Santos Silva. The clients came to the talented Portuguese design firm with the wish to renovate their apartment in the historical centre of Lisbon. The building, from 1890, had housed many lives and wore the marks of their many stories, but over time it fell into disrepair. The rehabilitation saw to it that the transformed abode offered all the conveniences of modern living.

Thick masonry stone walls surround the exterior of each apartment. Smaller rooms and areas are bounded by thinner, more fragile, walls. One of the primary challenges was to enhance the level of natural light that entered the spaces of the home. The compartmentalisation of the apartment, with cellular rooms, prevented light from freely crossing through the space.

They sought to address this challenge, transforming the spatial layout, whilst respecting the history and memory of the home. Opening the living spaces, the new interior is a contemporary expression of apartment living. The striking design, the bright and open space – you'll want to move in! Let's take a look…

The living area

The beautiful timber structure is exposed and restored, forming an elegant piece of art that also acts to divide the adjacent spaces. To support the new spatial organisation, the design introduces a second toilet for the social spaces of the home. From aesthetics to function, everything has been carefully considered and thought through.

The dining space

On the other side of the timber structure, this impressive dining space finds its home. The large glass table top is propped upon a timber structure and contemporary white chairs surround it. Feature lighting highlights various feature of the design and changes the atmosphere.

The kitchen

The kitchen has been completely transformed, in both its organisation and materiality. The monochromatic mosaic pattern sets the scene – it wouldn't be right if there wasn't at least a modern take on this unique Portuguese element. The rest of the design in achingly minimal. All white, adornment free, handleless: the usual M.O.

Storage

Throughout the home, the rational design elegantly weaves function and beauty. The storage is no mere afterthought, but always an innovative solution that is perfectly integrated into the design. And this cupboard, en-route to the bedroom, is certainly no exception!

The bedroom

The bedroom is delicate and sophisticated. A grey feature wall breaks up the white and forms a backdrop for the bed. The furnishings, the bedside tables, the lamps: it's all perfectly in place. Nothing is amiss in this charming bedroom, promising a calm and relaxing nights sleep.

The bathroom

Before we conclude the tour, we'll take a quick look at one last space – the bathroom. Inverting the predominately white finishes we saw elsewhere in the house, it dons floor-to-ceiling black tiles. White becomes an accent colour, attributed to the ceiling and fixtures.
