As we become more ecologically conscious and aware of the impact we have on our surroundings we often find ourselves looking back to ancient wisdom for solutions to modern problems. Feng shui is an ancient Chinese tradition concerned with helping humans to live in harmony with their environment, and never has that been a more pressing issue than now. That's why today we're going to take you through 8 simple rules that will improve your wellbeing, and as an added benefit beautify your home.

Feng shui may seem like a far out concept with no practical uses, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Actually the basic tenets of feng shui have already become staples of interior decorating, such as limiting negative space, orienting your room to allow free movement, and including plenty of greenery to keep your home fresh. We assure you that no matter your beliefs you'll find a couple of tips in here that will make a big difference in your home, so keep an open mind, and let's get started!

1. Arranging your living room

Sofas should always be placed against a sturdy wall, with a very small gap in between. If there's no avoiding the gap behind your sofa then place a sturdy console table behind it that's taller than the sofa, with a mirror in front of the sofa so that you can see behind you.

The chairs should be arranged to facilitate energy exchange between guests, or in other words make sure everyone can make eye contact and the conversation can flow!

2. Orienting your bed

Perhaps one of the famous, but least understood aspects of feng shui is the orientation of the bed. The premise is simple, the bed should be on the farthest wall from the door, but shouldn't be aligned with it.

Aligning the foot of the bed with the door is known as the coffin position, as that is how bodies were traditionally carried out of the home, so either offset it slightly, or if you have a small bedroom a good solution is to place the bed diagonally in the corner like they have here. This room gets extra credit for the round shape of the bed and the grounding rugs on the floor!

3. Kitchen cabinets

Your upper kitchen cabinets should reach to the ceiling, with no gap in between, as this becomes dead space, perfect for collecting dust and static energy. If you do have a gap though there's a simple solution; place an object of personal importance up there, or alternately use life giving plants to energise the area like they have here.

4. Mirrors

Mirrors have a special significance in feng shui, as they bounce energy and light around the home, so basically the more the better. Use mirrors to expand your perception of the size of small rooms, and to lighten up dark areas. Fireplaces allow energy to flow directly out of the house, so if you have one place a mirror above it to bounce that energy right back into the room.

5. Make sure your home is well lit

Dark areas of the home represent the neglected aspects of your life, so it's important that every corner of your home is well illuminated. The best way to do this is with plenty of natural light, making sure that windows are unimpeded and the room is arranged to take advantage of the sunshine.

Now it's time to bring in the lamps to make sure that there's no forgotten spaces in your home, there's tons of different options available so you can find something that perfectly fits your home decor.

6. Clear out the clutter

Probably the easiest yet most elusive of the feng shui rules is keeping your home clear of clutter. The first thing to do is to ensure that your home has plenty of storage available to ensure that everything has its proper place. Next is just to be vigilant about keeping your home tidy.

Dining room tables are notorious for clutter, often ending up covered in letters, newspapers, and pretty much everything else, so focus on keeping it clear to promote tranquility.

7. Clean windows and fresh air

If eyes are the windows to the soul, and windows are the eyes of the house, then it's important to keep them crystal clear. Make sure your windows are free from gunk and grime, and give them a wash as often as possible, this allows energy to flow in and out of the home freely.

It's also crucial that there's plenty of fresh air circulating, so be sure to open those windows wide at least once a day to reinvigorate your home.

8. Decorating your home

Decorate your home with items of meaning and significance. Give personal items pride of place, so that every time you enter a room you see something that brings you peace and joy.

On the flip side, it's time to clear your home of any extraneous decorations that don't have any particular importance to you, they will suck up the energy of the room and just create clutter. Another good rule for decorating your home is to use lots of reflective surfaces like steel and brass to bounce energy around such as this fantastic light fixture.

Feng shui is a lot of fun, but as you can see it's also a really practical approach to design that ensures your home is filled with positive energy. For more great home tips check out this article on common lighting mistakes!
