When people hear the word tropical, the first thing that usually comes to mind is Paradise. Something exotic. A place to bask in the sun. Designing a tropical home is something that is truly enjoyable, you can play with colours and use different types of materials. Best of all, it is a relaxing retreat! Here are 8 refreshing home designs that you may consider looking into.

1. container house

Using shipping containers are now popularly used as the base structure for satellite offices, pop-up shops, inns, and food parks. So, why not use it for your own home?

One container costs approximately P50,000. Say you'll use three shipping containers plus other expenditures (labor, construction materials, furnitures, appliances etc) then, you're looking at P300,000 to P500,000. Now that's a very good deal for such a beautiful home!

Using container homes provide that industrial design theme. How the architect positioned the containers made the structure look interesting and playful! There's a nice lounge area, a beautiful balcony, turquoise coloured walls, and a couple of wood accents that make it very homey. This house is definitely something that would look great in tropical countries like the Philippines.

2. Elevated House

This model house would look amazing along the beachfront. The open bottom area is where you could place you water sports equipment (surfboards, scuba equipment, jet-skis) and then on the second floor is the bedroom is with a nice balcony. Adventure-lovers would go crazy for a house like this.

3. One story house

This one storey pitched roof home looks simple and elegant. Using prefabricated materials can also make this house very affordable. As for the design, the use of cream and grey colour along with the tiled floor, all blend very well. The lower pitched roof along the garage also exude a unique design that works beautifully. The glass doors at the front is also a nice way to open up the space.

4. Modern Style

Nothing says modern like black and white colours with a box-type geometric design with a flat roof. But even modern houses can look awesome in tropical countries. Adding in a verandah and glass panels that stretch through the whole wall provides a nice oceanic view. The house is also fenced for added security and privacy.

5. Modern contemporary brick house

Brick homes are resistant to termites, fire and weather, making it a very good candidate as a building material for houses in tropical countries. It's easy to maintain and it regulates temperature. Owning a brick home could easily increase the value of your home.

The design of the roof and the large glass windows balance out the old-feel that brick materials usually bring. Adding in a pocket garden along the window is also a nice touch.

6. Compact House

Elevated houses are a must for flood-prone areas, but who says you can't elevate it in style? Check out how Level Architect was able to re-conceptualise this simple, minimalist-looking house. The different elevations also make the design unique. The whole house is very light and airy with a nice relaxing lounge area that's perfect for weekend siestas along a scenic view. The roof deck is also a perfect spot for stargazing.

7. Lake house

Check out this beautiful shack-like house facing the lake. The design is a cool 70's rendition – sleek with a nice textured material, a balcony along the rear, and a ramp along the side. The bottom half of the house is also ingeniously utilised as a garage space. Imagine the front, facing the lake as a huge glass panelled facade, a grand escape for people who love the great outdoors while still being in the comfort of their own home.

8. Single-storey modern wooden house

This house has some features that are quite notable. First, I have to point out that instead of using a mosquito screen, here you'll see a wood designed screen with a very thin space in between which lets the air pass through. There's also the elevation and a nice glass-walled living room. It is also good to note how modern design could also blend well with a house that is predominantly made of wood. This house would also be beautiful along a tropical landscape. A tiny paradise you can call home.
