Since you're renovating the kitchen anyway, you might as well design it so that it makes kitchen work more comfortable and less of a strain on your body. The kitchen dimensions mentioned here are quite standard and will suit the average kitchen size. However, we have also included some special recommendations for small kitchens at the end.

Let's start with some general rules for kitchens of any size. The most comfortable countertop height for preparing food is 3-4 inches below your elbow. However, for making roti, low level surfaces which are about 8 inches below your elbow are best. The stove should be 5-6 inches below your elbow, to avoid hot oil splashing on your face.

Counter height

The recommended counter height is 34 – 36’. However, obviously you should factor in your own height and personal preferences as well. The general rules stated above will help you determine the perfect countertop height for you.

Counter depth

The suggested counter depth is 24’. But just like the counter height, you should decide on the exact measurements according to your height, the kitchen cabinets and kitchen appliances.

Upper Cabinets

The most ideal distance from the countertop to the upper cabinets or shelves is 15 – 20’. If the upper kitchen cabinets are placed lower, it will disrupt your work space and if it's placed higher, it will be difficult to reach the top shelves.

Kitchen Work Triangle

Basically, the kitchen work triangle is an effective layout as it can help create efficient use of work spaces. This kitchen layout also makes everything that you may need while cooking easily reachable. So the sink, stove, fridge, food preparation area and cabinets are just a little bit more further than an arm's reach. The recommended dimensions for a kitchen work triangle is that the total of its three sides should not be more than 278 inches.

U-shaped kitchens and kitchen islands

If you have an average-sized U-shaped kitchen or a kitchen island, the circulation space between countertops should be at least 64’. Don't make it too big or it won't be an efficient working space.

Counter Space Near the Stove

There should always be adequate counter space beside the stove so that you have all the ingredients that you need for cooking close to you. Ideally, you should have at least 12’ of counter space near the stove. The same rule applies for the fridge.

Dimensions and scale for small kitchens

For small kitchens, the space between counters should be about 30, while the counter space beside the stove should be about 4. It may seem small at first, but you'll soon find that it's just the right amount of space you need.

We hope this article has been informative and helpful. It's always useful to have a basic knowledge of the ideal dimensions for a kitchen so that your interior architect can design the perfect kitchen to meet your needs.
