Imagine a cosy-yet-inviting space that’s welcoming, bright, functional and (obviously) stylish. It’s not too difficult daydreaming about the perfect house for us and our family’s needs, but most of us need some help to turn those dreams into reality.

Enter AFAB Architecture, a professional architectural studio based in London and Spain. Founded in 2017 by young-but-passionate architectural duo Aitor Frías and Joaquín Peralles, AFAB Architecture has been at the forefront of combining contemporary designs with traditional Mediterranean elements to craft a unique, personal style for clients.

Let’s take a look at some examples!

Architecture is art

How would you define architecture? We like to think of it as a profession that expertly combines art and technique to transform a space or erect a structure in order to serve human needs (i.e. shelter, food, rest). A vocation that, in addition to expertise and experience, also requires a certain amount of inspiration and creativity.

Beyond its design concept, keep in mind that the style of each architectural project adapts to the particular requirements and demands of the relevant client, which makes it more unique.

Contemporary Mediterranean

The AFAB Architecture team define their style as “contemporary Mediterranean”, providing clients with a much more modern take on this traditional architectural style (one of the best “exports” of the charming Mediterranean setting).

This new contemporary Mediterranean style places a big importance on the presence of light, along with the inclusion of prominent materials (like wood and tiles) to enhance the clarity of an interior space and ensure an exceptional look.

A harmonious setting

One of the secrets of successful architects is their ability to play with the various elements like space, light, colour, etc. in order to craft the perfect space. That talent was certainly applied to this project which saw a modern family home being set up between two streets in Águilas.

The concept proposed by the professionals in charge? A modern and convenient open-plan layout on all three floors. And this perspective allows us to take in all three levels and the subtle way in which they “communicate” with one another in order to enhance the residents’ comfort, convenience, etc.

Nature at home or home in nature?

Mother Nature has always been a prime inspiration for architects (and interior designers, and gardeners, and landscape architects… ). With this proposal, the AFAB Architecture team took a step further by making nature (in this case a tree) the central spot of this structure and letting the design literally surround it.

This contemporary setting, built in Santa Marta, manages to achieve a fantastic fusion between the ‘man-made’ features and the natural ones.

Lots of light

Want to settle into a space that has no need for extra illumination? If you’re still busy planning your dream home be sure to include oversized windows, glass doors, skylights, and even interior patios or terraces that can usher in some extra sunshine.

The genius touch in this interior scene? The subtle hues of the finishes (walls, floors, furnishings) that help incoming light to bounce around.

Simple yet stylish

But what about the exteriors? Here we see how the team proposes a very clean and modern aesthetic for this structure’s façade. Simple lines, natural materials, and soft colours come together to craft this spacious structure that doesn’t show off at all, reminding us why the minimalist style is considered one of the most popular.

Traditional charm

Luckily nobody is forced to strictly stick to rustic, contemporary, or other design styles. With the right project and the right professionals, a wonderful mix-and-match could happen that takes the best of various design styles and crafts them into one exceptional structure.

This charming design in Calabardina is inspired by the traditional Mediterranean style, yet it also presents a strong less-is-more (minimalistic) look. Can't you see yourself serving ice tea (or something stronger) to your guests on that delightful porch with its curved arches?
